Real-Life Laser Eye Surgery Patient Stories
LASIK Can Correct Nearsightedness
Tiffany Smith grew up with poor vision, technically known as myopia, and she wore glasses. Myopia is caused by the eye's natural lens being too long or the eye's cornea and lens being too strong, causing light to focus in front of the retina.
Laser eye surgery for nearsighted patients works by flattening the central cornea so that light focuses correctly on the retina. LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is also an effective way to correct eye conditions such as astigmatism and farsightedness.
Note: LASIK does not prevent presbyopia, the loss of near vision that occurs as part of the natural aging process due to a lack of flexibility and elasticity in the eye's lens.
LASIK Removable Contact Lenses
As an adult, Tiffany Smith had contact lenses fitted for her eyes to help her see better. “Both worked well, but were cumbersome,” says Tiffany, who spent her free time learning stunts, riding motorcycles, and scuba diving. “Wearing contact lenses while scuba diving was nerve-wracking.” Eventually, Tiffany grew tired of the blurry vision she experienced without the help of glasses and contact lenses.
She immediately made an appointment with Dr. Assir. After an exam and a consultation on what the procedure entailed, she was ready to begin.
After administering a mild sedative, Dr. Assir used eye drops to numb Tiffany’s eyes. He then used an eyelid blink protector to help keep the eyes open and steady.
The doctor then used an excimer laser to create a paper-thin flap in the cornea. The flap was then folded back so the laser could enter the cornea.
Tiffany stared into a light while Dr. Assir reshaped her cornea with a laser that used a custom algorithm that Dr. Assir had developed himself. The algorithms were pre-programmed based on the exact dimensions of Tiffany's eyes.
After reshaping the cornea (about 30 seconds per eye), the ophthalmologist folded the flap back into place to seal it.
"The surgery was great and super fast," Tiffany said. "Just had time to listen to two and a half Harry Styles songs."
LASIK Recovery Time
Aside from a little watering in her eyes, Tiffany walked out of the operating room with no side effects. "It felt like cutting onions. That was pretty much the only feeling."
During her recovery, she was also treated with eye drops to relieve dry eyes.
Every day when she wakes up, she feels like a little miracle. "Have to keep reminding myself that didn't fall asleep with my contacts in," she said.
Tiffany has returned to acting and no longer has vision issues. "They can move the teleprompter a lot farther away now and still read the script easily," Tiffany said. She now has 20/15 vision in one eye and 20/20 in the other. “I am so glad that I can now donate my eyeglass collection to someone in need.”
